New Community Corporation will hold a grand opening for A Better Life, its new supportive housing facility for the chronically homeless, Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. There will be a ribbon cutting, speakers and light refreshments.
A Better Life is New Community’s permanent supportive housing project for the chronically homeless, which officially broke ground last year. A new facility will take the place where there once was an empty lot near the corner of 14th Avenue and Camden Street in Newark. The two-story building will feature 24 efficiency units designed for individuals who are battling mental illness and chronic homelessness, with a designated unit for an on-site supervisor. Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care will provide on-site medical and behavioral health services.
According to developers, the supportive housing project aims to reduce the burden placed on the emergency care system at University Hospital. To help reach this goal, the hospital will identify high utilizers of emergency care and provide referrals to staff at A Better Life for review and placement.
