Out of The Ashes Came Hope

It has been 50 years since the rebellion of 1967 tore through Newark’s Central Ward in response to years of racially targeted discrimination, economic disinvestment, political disenfranchisement and police brutality—issues that resonate in today’s political climate. But while New Community was born in 1968 from the ashes of racism, poverty and despair, its essence was deeply rooted in the strength, resolve and dedication of men and women, Newark residents, to help themselves improve the quality of their lives and their community.

Our Founder's Memoirs

“Out of the Ashes Came Hope” is an inspiring and timely memoir that illuminates the life work of Monsignor William J. Linder, who founded New Community in 1968. The book recounts how as a newly ordained priest, Monsignor underwent a radical transformation once he was assigned to the all-black parish at Queen of Angels in Newark. As a messenger of God’s love, Monsignor’s journey to Newark activates and galvanizes the community to believe that change is possible, and together they embark on a task of epic proportions—to rebuild Newark’s Central Ward.
